26-12-'10

During these christmasdays I discern myself missing someone even more then I already did..
My godmother, Naomi van Stapelen is in Kenia for about 5 months now and she'll be staying there for 5 more.
Though, I really appreciate why she went & I'd like to pay some attention to it!
She doing a research for The University of Amsterdam(UVA) and besides she's busy with the reason she's always travelled to Kenia: her own foundation called Duara which assists (and I'm quoting now) 'Maji Mazuri' to build a community and education center right in the slum but with vital frontage on the main road that skirts it. This means that secure access to the building will be available day and night. This 30,000 square foot facility will house all of the existing Maji Mazuri programs – the Head Start school, with places for 350 children, the micro-business loan program, the Talent Program for youth from 4-22 years - plus a new clinic, a community hall, a library, and an Internet cafĂ©. 2 floors will provide modern, spacious classrooms, and we will have a large and secure playground on the roof. There will be an elevator for the disabled children, solar panels to generate electricity and a rain water harvesting system.

Besides assisting Maji Mazuri in the construction of the building and raising funds for the educational facilities, Duara focuses in
particular in assisting Maji Mazuri on realising the Talent Program

I Think she does a wonderful Job (research as well as her foundation) and it's definitely worth missing her .. though I'd really like it to see her @ home.. <3
In the slum; Mathare Valley
